‘I’ is for Infection: Protecting your Education Cleandom

For young learners from K-12, school is at the centre of their lives: a place to gain academic skills, enjoy physical activity, make friends and develop social and life skills. Their teachers and school support staff make it all possible.

But in the midst of these positive experiences there lurks the ever-present challenge of – infection. From respiratory viral infections like colds, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to gastrointestinal infections like norovirus and rotavirus, the familiar domino effect routinely disrupts attendance for students, teachers and support staff – and on to family and community members outside the school walls.

Working towards maintaining an excellent cleaning and disinfecting protocol helps keep students and staff where they want to be!

Cleaning and disinfection are key strategies in health and safety measures that are recommended to be part of normal operations to help reduce the risk of transmission of communicable infections in schools. Strategies applied throughout the school environment, with attention to high-touch areas like door knobs, desks, bathrooms and lockers can help mitigate the spread of bacteria and viruses on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Why: Shared, frequently touched surfaces in high-traffic areas have the highest risk of pathogen transmission.

Why: Disinfecting last reduces the risk of potential cross-contamination.

Why: Presence of soil can prevent disinfectant from reaching the surface underneath to kill pathogens.

Why: Contact time is a length of time required to kill pathogens.

Why: Disinfecting dirty areas last reduces the risk of potentially contaminating clean areas.

Why: Any dirt/dust that may contain microorganisms dislodged from above are removed when you clean the lower surfaces
